India’s first 3D-printed post office has been inaugurated in Bengaluru’s Cambridge Layout, marking a significant stride in innovative construction techniques. The project, which was virtually inaugurated by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics, and IT.
Constructed by Larsen & Toubro Limited in collaboration with IIT Madras, the 3D-printed post office was completed in a short span of 43 days, well ahead of the designated timeline.

The project leveraged 3D concrete printing technology, where a robotic printer deposited layers of concrete according to approved designs. This not only accelerated construction but also showcased the potential of such techniques in the construction industry.
Regarding the construction at short duration, George Abraham, Head of Operations (south and east), L&T, said,
It is because of the robotic intervention that involves pre-embedded designs, that we were able to complete the entire construction activity in a period of 43 days as compared to about 6-8 months taken by conventional method.
The 1,021 sq ft post office boasts seamless construction with no vertical joints, and the flexibility of the 3D printing technology allowed for curved surfaces and adaptations to site dimensions.
With no constraints of plane walls, the technology enabled continuous reinforced concrete footing and three-layer walls. This achievement highlights the efficiency, reduced material wastage, and customization potential of 3D printing in construction. The first 3D-printed post office in the country opens the door for more research into this construction technology.
